Knowledge Base

Welcome to the Commons Engine Knowledge Base

We are prepared to cultivate both conceptual and highly practical knowledge around commons-based economies. Conceptual knowledge-building enables one to navigate and understand this unfamiliar paradigm, while practical knowledge builds bridges between them and capitalism-as-usual. Our conceptual knowledge is deeply indebted to the P2P Foundation, on whose Wiki we are beginning to collaborate! The real grit of practical knowledge will be packaged as tool-kits. These tool-kits will offer clear directives and templates that come from our direct experience working with a range of projects. We look forward to offering these following the journey of our first cohort – regenerative agriculture.

And for now? The following themes permeate our thinking and orient our projects.

01
GLOCAL PRODUCTION

“Glocal” (global + local) production is an alternative to globalization in which local production is complemented by emerging, globally distributed knowledge and design commons.

02
COLLABORATIVE FINANCE

ICOs and other Internet-based micro-financing mechanisms present opportunities to unleash economic creativity, divorced from the constraints of Silicon Valley’s venture capital and angel investment models.

03
PLATFORMS & ECOSYSTEMS

Platforms and the ecosystems they create make up the digital economy as we know it. What steps can we take to create open, equitable platforms that account for deep wealth?

04
THRIVABLE ECONOMIES

Thrivable economies go beyond green sustainability practices. They design for enriching stewardship, playful reciprocity, and commit to facing climate change challenges through better practices in all facets of productive work.

05
MUTUAL CREDIT CURRENCIES

Mutual credit currencies could change the world of cryptocurrency as we know it, by combining centuries-old accounting practices with the ease and transparency afforded by digital innovation.

06
HOLOCHAIN

Holochain is a free, open-source micro-accounting engine and framework for writing software applications that are held only by those who use them.
